The charter movement ushered in a new era of civic engagement in our nation’s public schools. As a strategy that welcomes and encourages new ideas to make public education work better for our kids, communities and country, chartering breaks down barriers that previously prevented passionate community members from helping to reimagine public education.
Over the past three decades, thousands of civic-minded community members from all fields – business, community, medical, faith-based, education and more – have brought their experience and leadership to the role of a charter school board member. Charter school board members can have a transformational impact on school communities – helping students learn, grow and reach their full potential. Board members help schools advance their mission and create more high-quality educational opportunities for students who need them most.
As school board members, the impact of these leaders is magnified beyond their careers and in support of entire communities. These leaders are creating a “virtuous loop of impact,” powering the charter movement to ever greater levels of making a collective difference for families.
This month, we celebrate a few exceptional board members who are ensuring all children have access to a great education.
As a business leader and photographer, one of two founders of the Illinois Network of Charter Schools (INCS), and now as chair of the INCS Board of Directors, David Weinberg embraces the importance of advocating on behalf of charter school communities. Read his story:
