Committed Policymaker: Governor Jared Polis

May 27, 2022

One policymaker’s support of the charter movement was on broad display this past month, as Jared Polis (D), the Governor of Colorado, penned one of the highest impact letters in opposition to proposed new regulations for the federal Charter Schools Program which would greatly reduce charter school developers’ ability to access critically needed startup funding. Polis’s commitment to the charter movement grew out of his effort to found two highly successful charter schools, The New America School, focusing on supporting 16-21 year old recent immigrants, and the Academy of Urban Learning, which emphasizes providing support to homeless students and other high need students. His awareness of the unique challenges that confront charter school developers led him to encourage the proposed regulations’ crafters to “go back to the drawing board” to ensure that any new rules would allow the charter movement to meet parent and student demand for “life-transforming schools.”
