Every movement begins with a choice.
Thirty years ago, educators, families, and leaders chose to be bold by choice—and the charter school movement was born.
From the first charter law in Minnesota to a national ecosystem reshaping public education, this is the story of people who challenged the givens, reimagined what public schools could be, and built something better for kids.
The National Charter Schools Founders Library preserves that legacy—and fuels what comes next. More than an archive, it’s a living home for the voices, laws, stories, and sacrifices that launched a movement and continue to guide its future. From early legislative drafts and oral histories to real-time tools used by scholars, schools, and policymakers today, the Founders Library keeps us rooted in our why.
In 2025, that history came alive through the national exhibit 30 Years of Chartering, and once again the Founders Library served as a trusted, nonpartisan source of truth—bringing light, not heat, to a defining moment for chartering at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Because chartering isn’t just a noun—it’s a verb.
It’s action. It’s a calling. It’s a promise we prove together.
Your support powers the Founders Library—preserving the past, equipping the present, and inspiring the next generation to keep bending the arc of education toward excellence for every child.
The past gave us the spark. The future needs our fire.
