Why We Tell Our Founders’ Stories…

November 29, 2023

Founders Library proud to partner with The 74

This month the National Charter Schools Founders Library is excited to highlight charter school leader/founder stories and share a free online copy of Richard Whitmire’s The Founders: Inside the Revolution to Invent and Reinvent America’s Best Charter Schools. Written more than seven years ago, this book grew from Richard Whitmire’s interest in high performing charters, the inspiration of Don Shalvey, and Whitmire’s partnership with America’s education news source, The 74.

Recently, The 74 agreed to allow the Founders Library to share Whitmire’s book and to link to charter school founder stories they captured as part of the book’s release. We hope you will take a look and share with others.

Whitmire wrote the book to share the story of high performing charter schools across the country who were changing the arc of education for the nation’s most at-risk students.

“I love that so much of The Founders book is about the history because one thing I found when I started going to these charter organizations is they are all so relatively new they have no history,” says Whitmire in one of the videos. “Fully half or more than half the book is on establishing that history, especially the people-to-people relationships, but then I wanted to take it into the future a bit and say where are we going next.”

Sharing the histories of charter school founders to leaders and teachers of charter schools today is an important part of our mission. We know that history matters and that the choice of chartering is crucial to ensuring that all students have access to an excellent education!

We hope that you’ll take the opportunity before the end of this year to help support us in our mission of capturing the founding history of charter schools. There are many ways you can help us tell these stories. Please visit the Founders Library Get Involved page today!

Again, thank you to Richard Whitmire and The 74 million for promoting charter school founders and for partnering with the National Charter Schools Founders Library!
