Committed Policymaker: Senator Booker

May 27, 2022

For New Jersey US Senator Cory Booker (D), also a recent signatory on a high impact letter in opposition to the proposed new CSP regulations, a personal connection to charter schools came via his decades of on the ground work in his hometown of Newark where he saw first-hand how the growth of charter schools resulted in thousands of low income students accessing inarguably better public education than was available previously. His commitment began even before being elected mayor when he decided to join the Board of Directors of North Star Academy and to form a nonprofit supporting school choice in Newark. During his two terms as mayor, the number of students served by charter schools in Newark tripled, a function of Booker’s willingness to push for the funding, facilities and authorizing decisions that high-quality charter schools like Great Oaks Legacy and KIPP needed to thrive and grow. Some of those efforts were considered controversial in their time, but today Senator Booker unapologetically makes a “direct connection between even the most controversial things that were done and the success we’re having now.”
